According to the 2002 U. S. Bureau of the Census, 2.3 million grandparents are raising 6.0 million children in the United States. Nearly 30% of these families live in poverty. Most of them have experienced the loss and grief associated with the absence, explained or otherwise, of the birth parents.

There are 345,1041 children in the State of Florida living with relatives and foster parents. Of this number, 329,987 are living with relatives not enrolled in the Relative Caregiver Program, 15,117 are living with relatives enrolled with the Relative Caregiver Program and 15,1432 are in foster care.

Within Brevard County there are approximately 103,897 children. The Department of Children and Families, through foster families and other county facilities, take care of 500-1300 of these children while grandparents are raising 6,324 and relatives 1,434 (totaling 7,758) of Brevard's children. Over 13% of Brevard County's children are being raised by someone other than their parents.

Identifying financial, social, health and legal resources can be confusing, time consuming and difficult. Within Brevard County, we have created our organization to help you locate resources you need and understand your options.
